The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a national assessment used as a common yardstick to measure knowledge in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, U.S. history, and Technology and Engineering Literacy. The NAEP provides an understanding of student academic progress over time.
Students in grades 4, 8, and 12 participate in the annual assessment; with only a small sample of each grade level selected to participate. The Clark County School District and the state of Nevada support and encourage school participation in the assessment. Schools are selected by the National Center for Educational Statistics to participate.
Results from the annual assessment are published to the Nation’s Report Card. Prior to 2017, Clark County School District results were included with the state of Nevada results. Starting with 2017 the Clark County School District was designated a Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) district which enables the Clark County District to receive NAEP results as an individual district along with the overall state results.
Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA)
Starting with the 2017 NAEP Assessment the Clark County School District joined the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) program. The TUDA program enables the NAEP to produce district-level results rather than aggregating the district’s results into the overall state results. This program is designed for large urban school districts and provides the data to compare our district with other large urban districts across the country.
Accountability Involvement in NAEP
The Clark County School District has minimal involvement in the delivery of the NAEP assessment as the program deploys field test coordinators and providers. Therefore the impact to school district resources limited to the classroom used on the assessment day for participating schools. The Accountability department at Clark County School District works with NAEP staff to coordinate assessment dates and provide accurate student rosters for the sampled grade levels and schools. Additionally, the Accountability department participates in regular training to ensure the proper procedures are followed before, during, and after the assessment.
District results will be communicated to the Superintendent and Board of Trustees as the data is made available to TUDA districts.
